MERCKX

In the 1960’s and 70’s, Belgian Eddy Merckx, nicknamed ‘the Cannibal,’ was the terror of the professional peloton. He was so mercilessly excellent that in 1975 his competitor’s fans knocked him down from the seat so that he wouldn’t win a sixth Tour de France. His strange name also showed up on top-quality frames and properly designed road bicycles.

From a cycling perspective, it is interesting that the name of this predatory master is connected to an artwork of almost academic approach. The (still) basic driving force of bicycles in the form of a ‘golden’ chain is presented on the background of a glass surface of classically perfect geometric forms. The artists’ classicist tendencies are shown to ample measure here, which is not to be seen as a complaint.
